Christmas 2013

Christmas at the Harbour Club was a colourful week of fun and laughter, chocolate and tinsel and festive food….

Our Christmas week began on Tuesday with traditional Christmas dinner plus all the trimmings, the Wednesday was our boxing day with cold meat and pickles, then Thursday was a real treat with Peggoty’s take away Fish and Chips.  We didn’t feel too guilty though, as we burnt off our festive fare with plenty of party games and dancing.

Meet Michelle and Bobby

Our lively afternoon suddenly got even livelier, with the arrival of one of our volunteers Michelle and her four legged friend “Bobby” the Springer Spaniel. According to our research the English Springer is a breed of gun dog in the Spaniel family, traditionally used for flushing and retrieving game. They are an affectionate, excitable breed that responds well to discipline and training. Well they got that right! He was certainly affectionate and excitable, but gentle with it and he lapped up all the attention he got from our Harbour Club members and staff. Definitely a ‘Ray of Sunshine’ on a cloudy afternoon…

Strawberry Tea 2013

Tuesday 16th July was our annual Strawberry Tea. It was a lovely opportunity for Members and staff to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment with family and friends.

Delicious home baked scones were kindly donated by Sally Mason, which we served with clotted cream, strawberry preserve and fresh strawberries.  We washed it all down with cups of tea from our best china. The entertainer was Allison Austin, she was fabulous and sang all the old favourites. It was probably one of the hottest days of the year, but we didn’t let it bother us, fun was had by all…

Easter at The Harbour Club

Easter at The Harbour Club was a colourful time. Preparations began with our giant mosaic Easter Egg and Easter Chick display, we all enjoyed decorating Easter Bonnets and our Harbour Club Easter Tree.

It certainly felt like Spring had arrived, even if the weather didn’t agree with us!  We made chocolate Easter nest cakes that were enjoyed with a nice cup of tea. Everyone went home with a smile on their face and a spring in their step plus a chocolate Easter Bunny in their pocket.

Helping our hungry feathered friends

We’ve had a cold snowy winter, so the members of The Harbour Club decided to make some delicious treats for our feathered friends.

We got one large bag of bird seed, two packets of lard,  we then melted the lard in the microwave and gradually added in the bird seed.  We took it in turns to stir our concoction and preserve our bicep muscles. We added string and then filled coconut shells and rice pots with the mixture.  We put them in the fridge for a few hours and Hey Presto, ‘Bird Feeders’. The empty coconut shells were the bird’s way of saying Thank you….roll on Spring.

Christmas 2012

Christmas began early at The Harbour Club. There was a lot to do, we started by baking our own individual Christmas cakes, and then decorated them with marzipan and fondant icing. The end results looked really good and were very tasty.

We started to decorate our hall, we made festive bunting and blew up balloons, decorated the Christmas tree and then sat back and relaxed with a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

On Wednesday 12th December we were entertained by 'Julie Jive', she sang and danced for us, we certainly got into the Christmas party mood. Festive fun was had by all!!!

Meet Jo and Snowy

July saw the arrival of two new members to The Harbour Club Team; Jo our new Therapy Assistant and her six week old, pet Cockatiel. Members of The Harbour Club were fascinated to watch Jo hand feed the bird from a specially adapted spoon.

Jo encouraged the members to help her name him, ‘Snowy’ was chosen by popular demand. Snowy is a very friendly little fellow, who enjoys being centre of attention as he learns to perch on members’ hands and shoulders. It is lovely to see the pleasure he gives to members, those who reminisce about owning their own bird and those that have no previous experience of handling birds.  Thank you Jo for introducing Snowy to us and we look forward to seeing him back at The Harbour Club again very soon.

The Harbour Club is One Year Old!

The Harbour Club is one year old, we celebrated in style, two days of celebration and two birthday cakes!!!!

On the first day we were entertained by Diane Hills, singing popular songs that we could dance and sing-a-long to. The second day we enjoyed a party with buffet lunch, birthday cake and good old fashioned party games...

We had a free raffle consisting of lovely flower baskets that we made up ourselves, plants and compost were donated to us by one of our volunteers – Rosie.  We even managed to get a photo of Jane wearing the crazy birthday hat!
